SR80 reviews by customers

I've done the research - these are THE cans to choose!
I did quite a bit of internet research before deciding on the SR80's. It seemed that every review and recommendation came down to either these or a few on Sennheiser's line. In the end, the Grado SR80's (or the sister favorites, the SR60's) were the most consistently favorable.

I found a website that had audio store recommendations for my area (I was rather surprised to find the official site, GradoLabs.com, didn't offer a "Dealer Locator" page so common these days) and so I called up Sound Factor in Pasadena and drove over to take a listen.

Wow. I was very skeptical going in, after all, could they really be as good as everyone says? They certainly are! I was hooked within the first few seconds. Granted, I've never owned a pair of good quality headphones, so nearly anything was going to be a step up, but these put anything else I've ever heard to shame. It really is true - you'll hear nuances and things in your music that never seemed to come through before.

Now I had really intended going in to buy the SR60's to save the extra $30, but I tried both and ultimately chose the 80's. Why? I felt the foam pads on the 60's seemed cheesy and cheap in comparison. The sound was nearly identical, at least to my ears, but felt these really were more comfortable.

Bravo, Grado Labs! You've earned another life-long devotee!

Great sound, Comfortable (for a while), and Inexpensive!
I have chosen a method for this review as I am not sure just putting a bunch of praise and 5 stars will help anyone. I listened to a few different types of music from their original CDs and here is what I found:

Note: I was using these through a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS. I was using no amplifier, although I hope to get one soon since these are low impedance cans and not exactly suited for portable player use.

Rock (311 - Beautiful Disaster): Very balanced spacious sound. High hat and snare drum are perfectly represented. guitars are vibrant and alive, much better than most cans I have used. Singer sounds similar to other cans, BUT with the grado's I can hear his echo SO precisely it is almost amazing. The bass is good but not overpowering, quite balanced.

Country (Garth Brooks - Friends in Low Places): Cymbal at beginning is VERY realistic and Garth's voice has a very distinct presence to it, along with a perfect echo trailing off his voice, even when other instruments are playing. Every instrument is perfectly represented and seems to hang in mid air. No imperfections that I can hear.

R&B/Hip-Hop (Game - This is How We Do (Fresh '83): Voices again are very well defined and the non bass beats are well represented with a spacious feel to them. This is where the one weakness of these cans come in. They definately do not perform great with the bass beats. This may be due to my lack of an amplifier, but I would generally say these are not appropriate for high bass music (my opinion of course). The bass sounds boomy and not real or powerful (much like a cheap subwoofer).

Other: (Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue (Album): This was a very good representation of what these cans can do. The instruments literally seem to hang in air. I am liking this alot and I don't even like jazz! The piano is VERY detailed and the bass is full and balanced. All other instruments sound great too!

So, in summary, I think these cans should be described as airy, full, and rich, with balanced mids and highs and a very appropriate bass response with most music. I will revise this review once I get an amplifier, as many have said this tightens the bass up dramatically.

You SHOULD buy these headphones if you listen at home in privacy and enjoy your music fully represented. You should NOT buy them if you are using them in a public setting (very loud to others due to open air diaphrams) or if the music you listen to contains fast repeated bass notes (As in many R&B/Hip-Hop songs). These are a great set of cans for $100. They are comfortable for an hour or two, but even with the new redesigned earpieces they will make the ears sore eventually. One nice thing about these cans is there is an almost cult following of modders, and a list of modifications can be found at:

Give these cans a try and you will not regret it. Better than any Sennheiser under $200 (in balance, space, and accuracy) and better than any brand of store bought cans I have tried (Sony, Philips, Koss, Audiovox).

Good sound, for everyone in the room
These headphones have awesome sound, unfortunately I have to have my media player on the lowest setting or my office-mates can hear my music (actually they still can!). Seriously, you can rotate the phones around so you're listening to the back of them and the volume is about the same!! Isn't the idea of headphones is that others around you can't hear the music? It's a pity, since the sound is nice, but they are unusable in the workplace.
