Taking Chances is not without its daring moments--we'll get to those--but the first order of business in any review of this much-hyped record, on which Celine Dion is said to have slunk away from her songbird instincts in favor of embracing her inner rock & roll wild child, should be fan reassurance. Therefore: fear not. Taking Chances has its share of poignant, pretty ballads (both "A Song for You" and "Right Next to the Right One" are goosebump-raisers) and love songs (the hopeful, heartfelt title track, which unfolds into an anthemic power ballad midway through, may be the best one). As far as standard Celine fare goes, in fact, Chances is likely her strongest non-French outing since 2002's A New Day Has Come; nobody unfolds a lyric with more care or nuance. And, as the subtle "My Love" deftly proves, any early-career instincts to over-sing have gone poof along with her '90s-era, sweet-natured-kook persona. Because it's a generous 16 songs long, it may even be possible to ignore the non-Celine-like moments on Taking Chances and just enjoy the more fan-faithful tracks. But that wouldn't be any fun, would it? There are songs here--"Can't Fight the Feelin'," "Fade Away," "That's Just the Woman In Me"--that will astound diehards and make fans of those who've dissed her for more than a decade. If you didn't think the diva behind Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" had it in her to screech from the bottom of her soul, a la Janis Joplin, flip to track 15 and guess again. --Tammy La Gorce

Taking Chances reviews by customers

Mitigated Risk
Like many other Celine Dion CDs, this one seems to go on forever and has a few highlights amongst lots of middle ground. As usual, vocals are unsurpassed but material doesn't often merit the effort put into it. Title track is a highly enjoyable pop song, and there are a few other fine moments, but overall the whole thing runs together. It sounds expensive and well polished but not particularly distinctive. "Falling Into You" is still the artist's high watermark in terms of overall album quality.

WELL DONE!
First of all, I would like to say that people who are not Celine's fans have been bashing her for years for her choice of "Power ballads". Well, my question to you is "Are you gonna like her if she changes her style?".

"TAKING CHANCES" is appropriately titled. The sound is different from her other albums and she was honest about it. She said that she will still have ballads in this CD, just edgier ones. And I notice that.

Taking Chances: This is her first single from this album. I have to admit it's not my favorite song but a good introduction on how the whole CD is going to sound. It's definitely a good preview. And for all of you who think she "stole" this song, she didn't, the original singer gave it to her to sing.

Alone: Again, her voice is powerful and her rendition is really good.

Eyes on me: It's bollywood influenced. This song shows that Celine can sing anything. If Shakira sang this song, nobody would focus on the lyrics or the voice, just the dance moves, but Celine's voice gives more depth. Frankly though, it's my least favorite song on this album. It just feels like it doesn't belong here.

My love: Nice ballads. Her voice is soft and even though it's another ballad, it's more rockish.

Shadow of love: Again a more rockish song that her usual style.

Surprise Surprise: a more "young" style. Reminds me of Kelly Clarkson but of course Celine's voice gives it life.

This time: Very political song about abused women. Even if it's a Ben Moody composition, it matches Celine's voice very well and the lyrics are very powerful.

A New Dawn: My favorite song on this album. It's gospel inspired. The vocals are amazing. She starts really low and it's amazing how she can reach those very low notes and go really high right after. The music is outstanding and the lyrics are very uplifting.

A song for you: This is not the song everybody is thinking. It's a different song, an original compositon by Ne-Yo. It has a lot of piano and her voice is soft and simple.

A world to believe in: Again another edgier ballad, nice lyrics.

Can't fight the feeling: You've been wanting her to sing edgier song, then this a song for you.

I ain't got nothing left: Beautiful song

Right next to the right one: Nice ballad. Again different from her "Power ballad" style. Still her voice sounds really good. She actually doesn't scream but her voice remains really soft. More folk inspired.

Fade away: This song is young and uptempo. Reminds me of Kelly Clarkson a lot, which is a good sign that she sound younger.

That's just the woman in me: My number 2 favorite song in this album. Her voice is amazing in this song and the music is kinda blues and jazz influenced. Really edgy and different.

Skies of LA: Pretty song, again her voice is softer but still sounds really good.

Conclusion- This album is "Taking Chances". She adapts very well to this edgier sound without losing who she really is. She still has ballads in them but they are more grown-up and edgier.

So for those of you who think it sounds like all ther other albums, it's like you telling Snoop Dogg to stop doing rap and start rock or something. And for those who think she is trying to be someone she is not, well, listen to her French albums, she has been doing this kind of music in French since a long time.

Overall it's a consistent album.

Didn't like the "new" Celine
I've loved most of Celine's albums in the past, but this one is a big disappointment. I don't feel like the sound does anything to enhance her beautiful voice. I'd advise people to preview this album before buying; I'm glad I did. Some people might like it but not me, a long-time Celine fan.
