Whether you're on the road or stopping off at a wi-fi coffee shop, work more productively with the Toshiba Satellite A75-S213 notebook PC. It features a brilliant 15.4-inch TruBrite screen and SRS TruSurround XT virtual surround sound capability--perfect for your multimedia presentation or a cinema-like experience when watching DVD movies. It also features a hyper-threaded Mobile Pentium 4 processor, 100 GB hard drive, 1 GB of installed RAM (1.5 GB maximum), dual-layer, multi-format DVD burner, integrated 54g wireless connectivity with support for Atheros SuperG technology, and Windows XP Home edition. The Basics - Hard Drive: The 100 GB hard drive (5400 RPM) is a above average in size for notebook PCs, and its capacity is a welcome size for such a multimedia-centric notebook.
- Processor: This notebook is powered by the 3.33 GHz, hyper-threaded Intel Mobile Pentium 4 processor 548 which rests close to the top of its class in terms of speed (as of June 2005). It provides near-desktop PC performance for your notebook and helps to conserve battery life. It has a 533 MHz front-side bus and 1 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.)
A hyper-threading processor helps a PC to run multiple demanding applications at the same time. This technology enables the processor to execute two threads (a part of a program) in parallel, boosting performance during key high-drain procedures. This results in more efficient software performance (such as faster reaction times in gaming applications) and enhanced multitasking. - Memory: The installed 1024 MB of RAM (2 x 256 MB, PC2700, 333 MHz DDR SDRAM) will help you power through multimedia presentation and heavy-duty spreadsheets. It has 512 MB of onboard memory with just one available memory slot, occupied with a 512 MB module. You can upgrade this machine to a maximum of 1.5 GB (1 x 512 MB, 1 x 1024 MB).
- CD/DVD Drive: The double-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer DVD+R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your mp3 collection. It features the following speeds: 2.4x DVD+R-DL, 8x/4x for both DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW, and 24x/10x for CD-R/RW.
- Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 86-key keyboard and electro-static two-button touchpad. It also provides CD control buttons (play, stop, skip backward, skip forward).
Screen, Graphics and Sound The A75-S213 has a 15.4-inch XGA display w with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. It also provides TruBrite technology, which makes images brighter and more vivid thanks to its anti-glare feature. Video and graphics are powered by the ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 IGP card, which delivers strong 3D rendering and shares 128 MB of memory with the processor's RAM memory. The integrated audio card (Realtek ALC250) provides 16-bit stereo sound via the built-in stereo speakers as well as SRS TruSurround XT virtual surround sound. Connectivity and Expansion Slots The A75-S213 has an integrated Atheros 802.11b/g wireless-LAN that supports Atheros SuperG technology, which uses packet-bursting, fast frames, on-the-fly data compression/decompression, and dual-channel bonding to enhance throughput to double that of 802.11g. You get a good offering of connectivity options, including both super-fast USB 2.0 and Firewire options: - 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
- 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
- 1 parallel port for connecting older printers and scanners
- 1 VGA monitor port
- 1 S-Video out
- 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type I/II, 32-bit)
- 1 headphone jack
- 1 microphone jack
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Fast Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems). Preloaded System and Software This system comes with the Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 operating system with Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Works, Microsoft Office OneNote, ArcSoft ShowBiz DVD Version 1.3, and Sonic Solutions RecordNow! Basic. Dimensions and Weight This notebook measures 14.4 x 10.8 x 1.8(WxDxH) and weighs 7.9 pounds Power It's powered by a 12-cell rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which has a battery life of up to 3 hours (depending on usage). Toshiba Satellite A75-S213 15.4" Notebook PC (Intel Pentium 4 Processor (HT), 1024 MB RAM, 100 GB Hard Drive, DVD SuperMulti Dbl Layer Drive) reviews by customers
Buyer beware Oh boy where do I begin...
I bought this hunk of junk about three weeks ago and right out of the box (as in within 5 minutes of use) noticed a problem I'd never encountered before with any laptop I've used, and I've had a Dell, a Vaio, and two Gateways. It shut itself off. Didn't reboot, didn't go into hibernation, it just shut itself off. Now it doesn't do this every single day, just most, and usually at the most inconvenient of times. So today I'm working on a letter I'm writing and it turns off again so I decide to go Google this series, the A75 and see if there are any issues with it. I can tell you I wish I had done that before I bought this thing. Apparently, and if you don't believe me, go Google it yourself, there is a issue for most users with this and another series (a 70 I think it was) with over heating, and static discharges that lead to the computer shutting itself off at random. Oh joy, Toshiba knows this entire series is flawed and has done nothing. And here I thought only Dell did that.
Most people from the message boards I've seen end up with the computer being replaced, only to unfortunately end up with the same problem. (as Toshiba just replaces the computer for the exact same model)
The pluses to this computer? Well yeah, it's fast, it's got fantastic picture quality, the sound as some have said is fairly dull. In all honesty, were it not for this one large design flaw it would be a really amazing computer at a fantastic price. But when you've got a design flaw that in theory can over time fry out the entire system, it's not a good buy. Or a good bet.
Consider it a word of caution to make sure that you truly research your future computer purchase. I know I wish I had.
Excellent buy I purchased this computer for biz and personal. When arrived, the wireless connection was not functioning. I had to contact support. The wait was a little lenghtly especially calling from overseas. Anyway, the problem was solved within 3 minutes. (needed to hit a function key) The speed and capacity is excellent. Would prefer it the system had included more software packages. (free) The only issue I have is it is a bit heavy to carry arnd. I recommend this computer, value for money it is very GOOD!!!!!
Keeps Me Happy This Laptop is solid.
I haven't had many issues yet so I haven't had to deal with their customer support - who has decent support anyway? The thing works like a charm, though. While at times I may have issues with one of my user setups, that can solely be blamed on...Tada, Microsoft! The speaker levels do leave something to be desired, but it is what it is, a laptop and not a sound system.
Another issue I've had so far is the left click button loosening up! Other than that the thing is great! I've got kids, a dog, and everything a busy house has and it's held true to the test.
I would recommend Toshiba over a Sony any day of the week.
